Hospital districts are community supported governmental entities charged
with delivering health care to their communities. They fulfill a vital role
in Washington State 's health care system because without them, many people
would be unable to receive health care in their own communities. The Washington
State legislature granted local communities the ability to create their own
hospital districts in 1945. Nearly half of Washington 's 90 hospitals are
part of a public hospital district. Hospital districts are authorized not
only to operate a hospital, but to deliver any service to help people stay
healthy-physically, socially and mentally. Because they're owned and governed
by local citizens, hospital districts tailor their services to meet the unique
needs of their individual communities. It is this community-based mission
that defines and distinguishes hospital districts from other health care entities.
The mission of the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is to establish teams of local volunteer medical and public health professionals who can contribute their skills and expertise throughout the year and during times of community need.
